An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president just before it was publicly declared, leading to inquiries about potential gains made from confidential information of the US operation.

Market Movement in Forecasts

Bets placed on the crypto-platform, a blockchain-based service, that the Venezuelan president would be out of power by the close of the month increased in the period preceding Donald Trump stated on January 3rd that Maduro had been taken into custody.

A single trader, which became a member last month and took four positions, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a modest bet of $32.5K.

It remains unclear. This unidentified trader had only a string of letters and numbers for identification.

Probability Spikes Before Public Statement

Platform data shows that participants assessed the probability of Maduro's exit at just a low 6.5 percent in the afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.

Yet the market's assessment had increased to 11% by the end of the day and surged in the early hours of January 3rd, suggesting a rapid movement in positions right before the social media post was made.

"This specific wager has all the characteristics of a transaction based on non-public details," commented Dennis Kelleher.

A small number of other individuals also earned tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.

Legal Questions Grows

Some lawmakers are growing concerned.

A bill put forward on the start of the week would prevent government employees from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a market.

The Prediction Market Landscape

Event-driven betting sites have grown significantly in recent years, with participants able to wager on everything from elections to politics.

This sector were examined under the Biden administration. However it has received a warmer welcome during the current presidency.

Insider trading is against the law in the stock market, but there are more ambiguous rules in the event betting arena.

An official representative for a competing service said their site "has clear rules against trading on insider information of any form."
